Bring home an authentic piece of nomadic artistry. This vintage Baluch rug was hand-knotted by tribal weavers along the Afghanistan–Khorasan corridor. Its saturated madder reds, inky indigo blues and crisp geometric medallions make it a powerful focal point for modern, rustic or boho rooms alike.

Weaving tradition: Baluch/Taimani family of weavings from northwest Afghanistan/eastern Khorasan. The stepped cruciform medallions, end panels with narrow stripes, and the classic leaf-and-calyx main border are hallmark Baluch features.

Knot structure: From the back views, the knots show slightly diagonal “jogs” with depressed warps—consistent with asymmetrical (Senneh) knots open to the left, the norm in Baluch rugs.

Materials: Soft, oily hand-spun wool pile on wool warps and wefts; dark overcasting on the selvedges likely goat hair—a common tribal reinforcement.

Dyes: Deep madder red, natural indigo, walnut/tea browns, and small accents of yellow-orange and green. Minor brighter orange accent lines suggest a touch of early aniline for highlight—typical of mid-20th-century tribal work.

Age: Mid-20th century, c. 1955–1975. The even oxidation of dark tones, gentle abrash, and intact yet shortened fringe support this dating.

Pile/Density: Medium pile (approx. 5–6 mm). Back pictures indicate an estimated 90–110 KPSI (~14–16 × 6–7 knots/inch), a good tribal density.

Condition: Very good vintage condition. Even pile with light age-consistent wear on high areas, intact side cords, ends with original overcasting and short tassel remnants. No visible stains, holes, or major repairs—ready to use.

Pattern & cultural notes

Motifs: Three bold cruciform / totemic medallions filled with little tree/leaf sprigs (a Baluch life-symbol motif). Small rosettes and latch-hooks populate the midnight ground—a protective device in nomadic symbolism.

Layout (naqsha): Vertical triple-medallion composition framed by multiple guard stripes and a strong leaf-and-calyx main border. The narrow striped “elem-like” panels near each end echo bagface traditions and anchor the design.

Color story: Saturated madder red field with indigo medallions outlined in ivory highlights; touches of green and orange provide lively contrast without overwhelming the tribal geometry.
