Why you’ll love it:
This vintage Baluch tribal rug was hand-knotted in northern Afghanistan by nomadic weavers who favor compact knotting, glossy hand-spun wool, and bold geometry. The deep midnight-navy field holds a column of hooked diamond medallions framed by protective “ram’s horn” motifs and small flower rosettes—classic Baluch symbolism for strength, prosperity, and good fortune. It’s a striking, heirloom-quality piece with history, soul, and superb craftsmanship.

Weaving tradition & structure.

This piece represents the Baluch tribal tradition of northwestern Afghanistan. The compact handle, dark palette (madder reds, indigo blues, bottle-green with ivory highlights), and multiple narrow guard borders are Baluch hallmarks.

Close-ups of the back show fine, slightly diagonal knot columns consistent with asymmetrical (Senneh-type) knots, typically open to one side in Baluch work.

Warps and wefts appear to be wool (undyed, with darker wefts), with overcast dark selvages—another Baluch signature.

Design reading.

The field carries three stacked diamond “ashik” medallions outlined with latch-hooks; between them are tiny rosettes and boteh (seed/leaf) motifs.

The broad main border combines ram’s horn elements (strength & protection) with reciprocal zig-zag and running-dog minor borders, visually echoing the stepped geometry of the field.

The overall naqsha (layout) is a classic three-medallion gallery composition designed for tents and long rooms—balanced, rhythmic, and protective.

Materials & pile.

Pile: lustrous, hand-spun highland wool; medium-low pile height from age-appropriate wear, giving a beautiful velvety sheen.

Dyes: a traditional tribal palette; the reds and blues suggest vegetal base dyes with likely a touch of early synthetics common in mid-century village production.

Age & authenticity.

Wear patterns, oxidation in darker browns, softened colors, and fully intact edges indicate mid-20th century (c. 1960s–1970s) village/tribal production—authentic handmade, not machine-made.

Condition (honest assessment).

Very good vintage condition: even, low pile; edges and ends secure; minor, expected age toning and light waviness typical of nomadic weaving. No holes, stains, or distracting repairs noted in photos.
