This compact tribal kilim brings calm, modern neutrals to a centuries-old weaving grammar. Hand-woven in the Afghan flatweave tradition, it features a stacked lozenge (diamond) lattice framed by protective latch-hooks and a rhythmic triangle border. The undyed/low-chroma wool gives soft heathering and beautiful texture—perfect for an entry, bedside, kitchen runner space, or layered boho/Scandi vignette.
Weaving tradition: Afghan kilim in slit-tapestry technique (weft-faced flatweave). You can see the tiny vertical slits where color blocks meet and the even, tapestry-like handle in the close-ups.
Knot structure: Not applicable—no pile, no knots (flatweave).
Origin indicators: Nested diamonds, latch-hooks, toothed guard stripe, and the stepped triangle main border are classic north/central Afghan village motifs.
Age: Contemporary (c. last 5–10 years)—crisp edges, intact fringes, and even coloration without oxidation.
Materials: All wool—hand-spun look with natural heathering; wool warps & wefts. Palette: ivory, light/medium gray, charcoal, taupe/brown.
Pile height & density: Flat (no pile). Tight, regular weft packing; sturdy but supple handle.
Maker’s marks: None visible—tribal workshop piece.
Condition: Excellent—straight selvedges, original short fringes, lies flat, no holes, stains, or repairs observed.
Pattern & Cultural Notes:
Diamonds/lozenges symbolize protection and prosperity.
Latch-hooks (running around the inner frame) are apotropaic—protective “teeth” guarding the field.
Design (naqsha): Centered diamond lattice for focus, then denser hooked/triangle borders to “bind” the blessings—balanced, calm, and very usable visually.
A decorator-friendly neutral kilim with genuine tribal bones: hand-woven wool, reversible, and lightweight. Its oatmeal-to-charcoal spectrum reads serene and sophisticated, while the geometry brings subtle movement.
