A hand-woven Egyptian kilim from the Harrania/Akhmim weaving tradition, featuring a tranquil caravan by the water with palms and pyramids. It reads as art on the floor or a statement wall hanging.

Bring story and soul into your space with this authentic vintage kilim. Hand-woven in Egypt by village weavers in the late 20th century, it depicts a desert vignette—two small camels by the water, a rider and companion beneath palm trees, and pyramids on the horizon. The palette of undyed browns, sand, and cream is calming and versatile. Finely executed tapestry techniques and crisp silhouettes make this a collectible piece of folk art as much as a practical rug.

Detailed Expert Notes (visual analysis & authentication)

Weaving tradition & structure.

This is a weft-faced tapestry/ kilim, not a knotted pile rug. The images are created by interlocking/slit tapestry wefts—clearly visible in the macro photos where color blocks meet.

Because it is a flat-weave, a pile knot type (Ghiordes/Senneh) does not apply.

Edge finishes: tightly overcast side cords; warp ends left as short white tassels—typical of Egyptian workshop/village kilims.

Regional origin.

The subject matter (pyramids, date palms, camels, Bedouin figures), the creamy cotton warps, and the tapestry execution all point to Egyptian pictorial kilims, associated with the Harrania weaving village (Giza) and Akhmim/Sohag cooperatives that became well known from the 1960s onward.

Age estimate.

Wool sheen, even mellowing of the light ground, and the graphic mid-century styling indicate circa 1970s–1980s.

Materials.

Wool wefts (hand-spun to mill-spun mix; you can see the slight variegation and marled browns) on cotton warps (white fringe). Dyes are mostly undyed/naturally toned browns with soft tan and cream; any colorants appear to be stable vegetal/synthetic-azo blends typical of the period.

Pile height & density.

Flat-weave thickness approximately 4–5 mm.

Weave density ~6–7 weft rows per cm (≈ 15–18 per inch), a medium tapestry handle.

Design (naqsha) & motifs.

Narrative layout in three registers: foreground water with two camels; middle ground oasis with rider and companion; background pyramids.

Motifs: camels (endurance, safe travel), date palms (life, sustenance), water ripples (river/oasis), and pyramids (place identity). The bold silhouettes and limited earthy palette are signature elements of Egyptian pictorial kilims from this era.

Borders & layout.

No traditional multiple borders; the image is framed by the plain cream field and narrow kilim selvages—emphasizing the tapestry “painting.”

Maker’s marks.

No woven signature detected—common for village/women’s cooperative work.

Condition (honest assessment).

Very good vintage: even surface, no holes or stains noted in photos; mild age toning to the light ground, minor waviness at the ends, and a few irregular fringe strands—all consistent with age and handmade origin. Lies flat and rolls easily.

Construction time.

For this size and pictorial detail, 1–2 weeks of loom time for an experienced weaver (not including wool preparation).
