Vibrant, reversible, and authentically hand-woven, this statement kilim fills the room with color and rhythm. A tight diamond lattice hosts playful “ashik” medallions and ram’s-horn hooks, framed by a lively border of stepped triangles and protective ‘S’ devices. The palette—terracotta, teal, sky blue, saffron, mint, stone grey, and ivory—comes alive through subtle abrash (artisan dye variation), giving the rug a softly heathered, vintage-friendly look while remaining crisp and contemporary.
Weaving tradition & structure
This piece is a true kilim (flat-weave) woven in the Maimana/Andkhoy workshop tradition of northern Afghanistan and the adjoining northwest Pakistan weaving belt. Close-ups show tapestry/slit-weave construction with tooth-edged color joins, clean selvedges, and original flat fringes—hallmarks of loom-made artisan work. Because it’s a flat-weave, there is no pile and therefore no “knot type” (Ghiordes/Senneh) to report; pattern is created by interlacing colored wefts over cotton warps.
Origin handwriting
The stacked lozenges (diamond grid) filled with ashik motifs, the latch-hook/ram’s-horn devices, and the reciprocal stepped-triangle border are classic for Maimana-style tribal kilims produced for both local use and export. The saturated yet earthy palette with visible abrash further supports this regional attribution.
Age & condition
Judging by the unworn edges, even handle, and fresh dyes, this is a recent workshop piece (approx. 0–4 years) in excellent condition: no stains, repairs, or holes observed; ends and selvedges are tidy and intact.
Materials
Weft (face): hand-spun wool in terracotta, teal, sky blue, saffron, mint, stone grey, and ivory
Warps (foundation): cotton (visible in the greyish fringes)
Dyes: workshop dyes with artisanal abrash; ivory appears undyed/natural
Motifs & naqsha (design theory)
Diamond/lozenge lattice: order, protection, and balance; historically used to “net” the field and ward the evil eye.
Ashik medallions & hooked forms (ram’s horns): vitality, strength, and good fortune.
Border: reciprocal stepped triangles, cruciforms, and ‘S’ devices echo the field’s hooks—traditional guard motifs marking the boundary of the “home” (field).
Handle & density
Supple yet sturdy, lying flat with a rug pad. From the close-ups of the ribs, density is approx. 28–34 weft rows per 10 cm (a medium-fine kilim grade) that yields crisp geometry without stiffness.
Time investment
At this fineness and size, two experienced weavers would typically spend 10–14 working days on a horizontal loom.
