Bring authentic nomadic craft into your space with this beautifully banded kilim—hand-woven in the Anatolian flat-weave tradition. Its earthy brick red, olive, walnut and cream stripes are punctuated by small brocaded motifs, creating a versatile textile that works as a small accent rug, entry mat, bedside piece, table/bench runner or wall hanging.

Description & provenance (expert analysis)

Weaving tradition & construction.
This piece is a true kilim: a weft-faced flat-weave with supplementary weft brocading (cicim/zili type) used to create the repeating rosette and braided bands. The close-ups show tightly packed wefts covering the warps, with motif floats interlocked into the ground—hallmarks of nomadic and village weaving from central & western Anatolia.

Age.
Palette and wool handle (matte, lightly lustrous) suggest a mid-20th-century weave, c. 1960s–1980s. The colors have mellowed uniformly; there’s gentle age roll at the hem and one original fringed end with the opposite end finished as a turned hem—typical of older utilitarian kilims later adapted for home use.

Design (naqsha).
Laid out in horizontal bands: solid color stripes alternate with narrow guard lines and three decorative brocaded panels. The small hooked rosette/eye repeats (protection and good luck) and a braided/chain meander (unity and continuity) are classic village symbols. The rhythm of plain and patterned bands keeps the textile calm yet lively—great design economy in nomadic work.

Materials.

Wool on wool (both pile and foundation are hand-spun wool; no cotton visible in the fringe core).

Dyes appear to be a mix of natural and early synthetic, common to the period—brick madder-type red, undyed cream, walnut/soil browns, and a soft olive.

What makes it Anatolian.
The color recipe, the specific brocade vocabulary (small eight-petal rosettes and bead-like borders), and the balanced stripe order are consistent with village kilims from Central Anatolia (Konya/Karapınar–Afyon sphere). The tiny sewn hanging loops at the edge (visible in the macro) indicate it was also displayed as a wall hanging, another regional habit for attractive small kilims.

Very good vintage condition with even surface and handle.

Minor age rippling and a few tiny yarn nubs; edges are sound.

One end original fringe; the other end turned & stitched hem.

Clean, no pet or smoke odors. Ready to use.
