This exquisite handmade rug tells the story of the Baluch nomads, whose artistry thrives in the arid landscapes of western Afghanistan and eastern Khorasan. Woven nearly a century ago, this compact tribal piece was likely the face of a storage bag (chuval), used by traveling families to carry valuables or bedding across vast deserts. The wool is beautifully soft and lustrous, naturally dyed in shades of madder red, burnt orange, and warm earth tones.
Each hexagonal medallion (gul) is a symbol of unity, repeating in rhythmic harmony across the field—a visual expression of balance and tribal identity. The surrounding motifs echo ancient symbols of protection believed to safeguard the household. Every hand-tied knot captures generations of skill passed from mother to daughter, representing an unbroken lineage of craft and tradition.
Now freed from its utilitarian purpose, this small but powerful artwork becomes a striking wall hanging, entry accent, or collector’s display piece, radiating warmth and authenticity in any setting.
