An authentic Baluch rug with powerful symbolism and glowing, naturally dyed colors. At 129 × 89 cm, this portable tribal piece was woven for personal devotion and daily use, then cherished long enough to develop a mellow vintage patina. Its mihrab niche, radiant red sun rosette, and lively menagerie of tiny flora/avian forms create a rare, story-rich textile that reads beautifully on the floor or as a wall hanging.

Weaving tradition & origin: Baluch tribal work from western Afghanistan (Herat–Farah belt). The compact format, wool-on-wool handle, saturated madder reds and saffron-gold ground, and charismatic naïf drawing align with workshop-at-home Baluch pieces from this region.

Knot structure: Close-ups show compact, slightly diagonal knot collocation with soft ridging—consistent with asymmetrical (Senneh) knots used by many Baluch groups.

Design theory (naqsha): A stepped mihrab frames a garden of symbols. At center rises a sun/rosette built from serrated petals (light, guidance). Below and around it are Tree-of-Life stalks, small birds and seed pods (growth, renewal), and to the flanks protective geometric charms.

Borders: Multi-guard system with a narrow inner meander, then a flower-and-amulet creature/bird border typical of Baluch narrative frames, and an outer dark guard. These echo the field’s protective theme while tightening the composition visually.

Materials & dyes: Hand-spun wool pile on wool foundation. Palette shows madder red, indigo/indigo-overdye blues, walnut/tea browns, soft greens and straw-to-saffron golds—read as vegetal dyes by their nuanced abrash and oxidation.

Age: Vintage, c. 1970s–1980s. Wear is honest and even; colors show gentle sun-kissed fade on the field with deeper tone preserved under folds—typical of pieces 40–50+ years.

Pile & handle: Low-to-medium, velvety pile (~4–5 mm) with a lively, flexible handle—great for draping as art.

Condition (honest): Very good vintage. Light perimeter rubbing, minor end-fringe reduction, a touch of age fade/abrash that enhances character; sides are sound and the rug lies flat—no holes, stains, or structural issues visible in the photos. Professionally dusted.
